What to Include in a Precision Mold RFQ

Mold fitting and assembly work area

A useful mold quotation starts with a clear purchasing scope. The goal is not a longer form; it is to remove the assumptions that would otherwise appear later as cost, delay or a failed trial.

1. Say what is being purchased

Specify whether the order is for a complete mold, individual cores or inserts, molded samples, a production run or engineering support. State whether the tool will remain with the manufacturer or run in your own factory. These decisions change the quotation and the acceptance package.

2. Identify the controlled drawing

Provide the current 2D drawing and available 3D model, with part number, units and revision. Mark the dimensions, datums, assembly interfaces and appearance surfaces that determine acceptance. Explain which features are fixed and where design changes may be proposed. A quotation based on an old model can be technically different even when the part name has not changed.

3. Separate resin from tool steel

The molded resin and the mold steel belong in different fields. For the resin, give the grade, filler, color and functional requirements. For specified tool components, state the steel and required finished condition. When material selection is open, describe the application and the tests the samples must pass instead of guessing a grade.

4. Define quantities and milestones

Sample quantity, pilot quantity and repeat demand are not the same number. The first mold trial, approved samples, production completion and arrival at the destination are also different dates. State the critical deadline and the event it refers to. Include the delivery destination and any installation-equipment constraints for exported tooling.

5. Agree the evidence of acceptance

List the required sample checks, inspection records, trial report and handover documents. Identify who performs functional or application tests. NewwaySmart’s documented tooling workflow proceeds through DFM and design approval, tool manufacture, mold trials, sample and first-article reporting, approval and then production or tool shipment.

An incomplete brief can still start a useful discussion

At an early development stage, a sketch, sample or clear problem description may be enough to begin. Mark unknown items rather than filling them with arbitrary values. The first deliverable may be an engineering review that defines the missing information before a final manufacturing quotation.
