INSERT MOLDING / OVERMOLDING
Plastic Insert Molding & Overmolded Parts
Combine thermoplastic molding with metal or plastic inserts while controlling the interfaces that make the assembly work.
Manufacturing scope
We support product review, mold design, precision inserts, tool manufacture, trial molding and repeat production of insert-molded components. The program may include terminals, threaded inserts, locating features or other customer-defined substrates. Customers can supply the inserts or specify an integrated component package. Silicone insert overmolding is reviewed as a separate material and tooling route rather than described as ordinary thermoplastic molding.
Review the joint before choosing the tool
Define the function of the insert: electrical contact, fastening, support, sealing or another purpose. Identify retention geometry, the molding boundary and areas that must remain exposed. Incoming tolerances, material and surface condition form part of the mold design input. Bonding, mechanical retention and assembled fit are different acceptance questions; the test must reflect the intended function.
| Insert | Drawing, material, finish, plating or coating, critical variation and protected functional areas. |
| Resin | Exact grade, filler and color, processing requirements and compatibility objectives. |
| Tool and handling | Insert nests, support, shut-offs, loading orientation, presence checking and removal method. |
| Acceptance | Insert location, flash zones, retained dimensions, pull-out or torque test where specified, and finished assembly checks. |
| Production | Trial quantity, repeat demand, insert supply responsibility, inspection records and packing. |
From trials to a repeatable assembly
The trial plan records insert condition, resin, tool revision and sample identification. Inspection checks both the molded geometry and the insert’s functional features. Where a design changes, the effect on loading, shut-offs, downstream assembly and inspection is reviewed together. Release follows the agreed dimensional and functional evidence, not simply the successful encapsulation of the insert.
Plan automation around real insert variation
For higher repetition or difficult handling, we can evaluate nests, assisted loading, automated feeding, inspection and downstream packing. The assessment includes variant changeover, misloading, missing-insert detection, protection of contacts and handling of rejected parts. A manual or semi-automatic route may be appropriate during development before the product and demand are stable.
Can mold supply and molded-part supply be separated?
Yes. A tool-only order defines the receiving press, insert-loading arrangement, trial requirements, spare components and handover information. A production order defines insert ownership or supply, incoming acceptance, molded-part validation and packing. Both routes start from the same controlled product specification.
