A fitting that starts to screw into a cooling port is not necessarily the correct fitting. The thread designation, mating thread, sealing surface and quick-coupling profile must be specified separately. A request for a quarter-inch water nipple is not a complete mold specification.
Three families, different sealing arrangements
| Common name | Designation and geometry | Sealing principle |
|---|---|---|
| BSPP | G under ISO 228-1; parallel internal and external threads; 55° profile | An appropriate seal outside the thread, such as a specified face seal or O-ring arrangement |
| BSPT / ISO 7 pipe-thread system | R external taper; Rc internal taper; Rp internal parallel; 55° profile | The specified mating joint seals at the threads, normally with an approved jointing material |
| NPT | ASME B1.20.1 tapered pipe thread; 60° profile | Thread-interference joint with sealant as specified for the fitting and service |
ISO 228-1 explicitly separates mechanical fastening by parallel threads from pressure sealing. ISO 7-1 addresses joints sealed at the threads. The Swagelok identification guide illustrates the different 55° and 60° thread profiles. Rp is not simply another name for G. Both can be parallel internally, but their standard, tolerance and intended mating arrangement must be checked.
Why BSPT and NPT must not be mixed
Differences in profile and, depending on nominal size, pitch and dimensions prevent assuming interchangeability. Partial engagement is not a compatibility test. Forcing a mismatched fitting or adding more sealing tape does not correct the geometry. The resulting joint may damage the port or behave unpredictably during heat-up, pressure changes or maintenance.
For a replacement mold or a tool transfer, identify the existing port from the drawing, appropriate gauges and the actual fitting specification. A photograph and an approximate caliper reading may help start identification but should not release machining. Also distinguish nominal pipe size from a measured outside diameter: a fractional pipe designation is not an instruction to drill a hole of that numerical diameter.
A thread is not a quick-coupling profile
The nipple may have a threaded end that enters the mold and a different connection profile that mates with the hose-side coupling. Getting the thread correct does not guarantee that the coupling will latch, seal or deliver the intended flow. Specify the manufacturer and series, mating half, hose connection and shut-off arrangement as well as the mold-side thread.
Terms such as European, American or Japanese can help explain a customer’s installed equipment, but they are not manufacturing dimensions. A plant in any country may use imported presses, customer-specific manifolds or several coupling systems. The receiving factory’s approved drawing and parts list take precedence over assumptions based on its location.
What should the cooling-port drawing include?
Record the complete thread callout, thread depth, entry and sealing-face geometry, orientation and available wrench space. Include the fitting’s installed envelope, especially near lifting points, moving slides and the platen. Check that the selected port does not intersect another circuit or leave an inadequate wall around the cavity.
Specify coolant, operating temperature and pressure, seal compatibility and the agreed leak-test procedure. Document the circuit identifiers and flow direction when important. A thread gauge checks the thread; it does not prove the complete installed cooling circuit is leak-free or achieves the required heat transfer.
Before an export mold leaves the workshop
Check the actual installed fittings against the approved bill of materials, confirm access with hoses connected, perform the agreed circuit tests and identify the spare seals or mating couplings. Protect exposed connectors during packing and handover. NewwaySmart reviews these interfaces as part of mold-base and standard-component integration, rather than leaving them to be improvised after arrival.
